We have exciting new since the shelter closed for the 2009-2010 season! Despite opposition from a large number of people, the Planning Commission voted unanimously on June 3, 2010 to allow the shelter to be housed at the new location on 95 North Avenue. But it’s not over yet. The Mayor and Commission still have to vote on the Planning Commissions recommendations. This means that we need your help in having the shelter become established in the new building. How can you do this? By calling, e-mailing or writing your commissioner and offering your support for the shelter. If enough people contact them they have no choice but to listen and hopefully be persuaded to vote in our favor.
Good news! We now know that the shelter will be at the same location as last year: downtown in the First United Methodist building on the corner of N. Lumpkin and Hancock. We will be opening on the same date as usual on October 15th and will stay open til our usual date on April 15th.
You've reached the blog for the Bigger Vision of Athens organization. Our bigger vision is to provide the homeless individual a setting where he/she can address the issue(s) which caused his/her homelessness and find the help they need when they need it. We cooperate with other homeless service providers for their help. The Community Winter Shelter is our initial program. Thanks for your patience while we get our new Web site in order.
